Eternal Vow

Title: Eternal Vow
Creator: Tennyo_elf
Rating: PG-13 (for Blood)
Setting: Way, way into the future, after the last apocalypse Buffy will ever have to face
Summary: The last moment to exchange vows that will last an eternity.
Prompt: Exchanging Vows (Special Occasion, could be seen as a wedding)

The brown dirt floor was hard and brittle. The sky was red and hung low by unforgiving smoke. Buffy lay in Spike’s arms, her blood pooling below her, as she struggled to breathe. He watched her face, his features stuck in complete devastation. The others stood around them, unable to move for fear they would do something to advance the horrible inevitable.

Spike slowly lifted one of his hands and Buffy used some of her last bits of strength to clasp his hand with her own. She felt his other strong and steady arm holding her to him and felt a ghost of contentment pour into her.

“Promise me Spike.” Her words toiled for release.

“Anything love, anything,” said Spike in the barest of whispers.

“You’re a good man, so I-I trust you…to protect them.”

Spike thought she meant her family, their family, which included those who surrounded them, Xander, Willow, and even Oz. But after her steady blink, he understood. She meant everyone, the world, the human race.

“Always Buffy, I’ll protect them always. Don’t worry about a thing.” He tried to smile, but his tears blurred the smile from his eyes, “Go on now, heaven’s waiting for you, they have a nice warm spot up there with your name on it.” He could see her struggle to stay with him and it hurt him to see her in such pain.

“I-I’ll be waiting for you,” said Buffy as she felt him hold her tighter.

Spike couldn’t say anything to her, but the awe in his face was clear. The belief she held in him to be able to one day make it to heaven after all the wrongs he committed left him dazed.

“You better make it…wouldn’t…wouldn’t be heaven without you.”

“I promise,” Spike choked out.

Buffy’s eyes wandered over Spike’s face and he felt her slip away from him. Any moment she would be gone. “Do you think they’ll have good cheese there this time?”

Spike smiled for a second before he felt the tears run down his face, “Yeah, I think they would, for you.”

“Good,” said Buffy with a little more strength.

“Be happy Buffy and don’t wait up for me, yeah?”

“Sure…but I’m waiting…for you,” her voice was now a wisp of air. Spike knew she wasn’t all there, she was barely hanging on to her last ounce of life.

“I love you Buffy.”

Buffy smiled at him and gave him the most loving, adoring gaze that Spike could have sworn his heart had begun to beat again. “I know you do, but thanks for the reminder.”

Not long after that Buffy was gone, leaving Spike her legacy, her vows and her love.

Sorry for the late post for week one. :(

Oh, so sad! I can definitely see it happening, though; well done!

(And you don't have to worry about being late! All the prompts posted on a theme can be used throughout the month, so you're free to answer the wedding prompts right through to the end of June. :) )

Thank you! I guess I have a thing for angst, but when I write my goal is never angst but 'happy' though it somehow turns on me, damn my fingers!

(Thanks, still a bit new here, so I didn't know all the rules!)

Oh, that's depressing and lovely. I really like the idea that the vow is to reach heaven.

Thank you! I hope it's not too depressing, I just wanted something a sad yet hopeful, thus where the promise to meet in heaven came in.

I do really wish that. I know Spike has done really horrible things (his body count is in the 10s of thousands) but I think maybe after saving billions and being a good man (repenting?) that somehow a part of him will make it to heaven (like his soul will go there but his demon part goes to hell er something).

“Sure…but I’m waiting…for you..."

Oh, tissue alert!

Thanks! I will insist that Buffy will wait for Spike no matter what, even if he never makes it, so at least something of Spike will be with her in heaven.

*sniffle* That is so sad and beautiful. I could so see it happening like that. That's a tall order she's left him. Love how she turned around the lines from "Chosen".

Thank you! This is definitely how I see the end to Buffy's story. I can never see her growing old and dying naturally.

I wanted to do that (the turning around of the lines from "Chosen") about half way into writing this. It kind of just came to me and I thought it would work and be so right for them, because the "I love you"/"I love you too" just doesn't seem to fit for them.

Sad and beautiful. Perfect ending of a great Spuffy journey.

Thank you!

I really think this is how it should go down (the end of her story), Buffy dying after saving the world again, though it should be far, far into the future (maybe when she is around 40ish?). Of course Spike should be the one by her side and maybe at her side forever if he can make it to heaven.

Sad, but in a realy beautiful way!

I love Buffy calling him a good man.

Thank you, I wanted to add something sweet/hopeful to her death. Not make it grim or lacking, sort of a companion piece to the end of "Chosen".

With a soul I really think Spike is a good man (trying to be bad, lol).

Oh wow, I loved this, but so sad and heartbreaking.

Thank you very much! I know it's sad but I think it's also a bit hopeful that they may one day meet in heaven?
