Broad Daylight

Title: Broad Daylight
Creator: Double Dutchess
Prompt: in broad daylight
Summary: a vidlet (one minute, not counting credits!) that contrasts Buffy and Spike's daytime and nighttime activities. Obviously, it contains lots of sex and violence. No clips from Seeing Red though. The song is a butchered (by me) version of Broad Daylight by Gabriel Rios.

Very cool vid! Quite a contrast, oh yes indeed.

Thanks! But maybe the contrast is not as big as it seems... Sex, violence -- they're pretty closely tied together for Slayers and vampires!

Hardly a contrast at all. I love this because it speaks truth - Buffy and Spike had a relationship born of violence. He almost killed her in this episode as he almost did in School Hard. Her ties to the world made the difference both times. Taking her "out of the world" and into the dark was a project bound for failure.

(Can I say that here?)

This is freaking amazing! Wow! It's full of surprises, which actually surprises me. I thought I'd looked at every scene from all angles, but the parallels are stunning!

I love it!

Thank you so much! Making the vid was a journey of discovery for myself as well. When I started it I was thinking in terms of contrasts, but I soon found out the parallels were even more striking.

Sex and violence are closely related in certain worlds. This was awesome!

Sex and violence are closely related in certain worlds. Oh yes. For Buffy and Spike, they're virtually the same. Thank you for your lovely comment!

Very clever. Intercutting the scenes like that makes me reevaluate certain things. And I'm always impressed when vid makers match scenes to song lyrics. :)

Thank you; it's really nice to hear that my little vid got you thinking! I went into making it without a clear plan, but with the clips and the music and the lyrics, it all just kind of flowed together naturally. I'm pretty pleased with how it came out myself!

Point the first: I never let friendship interfere with my objective evaluation of a fanart.

Point the second: YES HELL YES to this! This is lovely to look at, goes by too fast, is superbly edited (as in, I'm not even aware of the editing, I'm just riding the rhythms of music and motion) It's interesting to me that so many Spuffy stories and vids lean towards the fluffly, schmoopy side of things and so few remember that the relationship was born from violence. You do just that here and it's so skillfully and subtly. Not to judge or bash but to describe.

Harsh Light of Day is one of my favorite episodes to point back to or think about when I find myself lost in Spuffy schmoop and "oh he was such a gentleman in S4" NONSENSE. When I was watching the series three years ago I thought it was one of the most vicious fights we'd seen on the show so far in terms of a true brawl, and I still think that. And it's the second time Spike very nearly killed her - until he mocked her about her love life and then her anger fueled her to get the best of him. It's a little different to Joyce and the axe in School Hard but similar theme - Buffy's ties to the world are precious to her.

Aesthetically this is gorgeous - I love the alternation between the daylight scenes of Harsh Light of Day in which he tries - and fails - to come to her world, superficially. It's too early in the story - he hasn't earned the right to stand in the light yet. And then the cool blue tones for Dead Things (blue-toned Buffy reminds me of the banner I just did for Gabrielle's story so I love the resonances here) it can signify peacefulness but also night, coldness, death. She tries on his world for size, with his *ahem* encouragement, but once again it's a poor fit.

I need to watch this a few more times. and that's the biggest compliment I can think of. Again, I LOVE your skill with editing here (it's one of my kinks.)

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! I'm so pleased to hear my little vid worked for you both in terms of content and aesthetics. And I agree with your assessment of the Spuffy relationship. Although I can certainly appreciate fluff and schmoop when I'm in the mood, on the whole I much prefer vids and fics that show the relationship between Buffy and (pre-soul) Spike in all its harsh and violent glory. As you say, their relationship was born in violence, and that's one of the reasons why I like it so much. Those two came such a long way together!
