Setting An alternate universe a day or two after The Gift

She sleeps so sweetly, he hardly likes to wake her. Curled on her side, one hand pillowing her chest. Just as she fell asleep. He's watched her ever since.

Can't blame her for taking her time. Hell of a fall, and even with Slayer healing there must be a lot to knit together. All the time she needs, so long as she wakes in the end. And she will. He knows it.

He talks to her. Tells her what she did. "Saved the world, again, of course. But you knew you'd do that. Killed a hellgod, or something like that, Glory won't be coming back. Saved your little sis, of course. Always knew you'd manage that. Did I tell you about her blood? I could smell it, on the tower. Even after I fell. Powerful, your little sis-"

And she stirs. Hah. He knew talking about Dawn's blood would do it. Of all the powerful totems the Slayer's been occupied with lately, there's nothing like the blood that beats in Dawn Summers' veins.

"Dawn?" she says. It's a fragile voice, rusty with disuse. She tries to sit up, gingerly, and her strength visibly returns with the movement. Always better when she's moving, is Buffy.

"Slayer," he says. "How d'you feel?"

She stretches, wriggles. It's a pleasure to watch her move, rediscovering her strength. "I'm good. Big crazy people tower, right?"

"Definitely."

Non-committal words only. He's waiting for it. For the penny to drop. For Buffy to remember just what went down. The magnitude, and desperation. Her broken body after that plummet, that no ordinary human could ever have survived.

"I'd be surprised I survived," she says, and there's a little twinge to her tone that he recognises. So he knows what's coming, even before she goes on, "Except I already know that I didn't." She shakes her head, consideringly, and finds her fangs, her vampire visage coming through, yellow-eyed huntress in his bed. "I used to dream of this, you know. Called 'em nightmares. I might reconsider."

That twinge remains. Is that Darla coming out in her? The Aurelius line, snarky buggers that they are? Or is that just how evil sounds?

"How'd you swing it?" she asks. "They'd never let you- Do they even know?"

"Didn't ask permission," he says. And leaves her to take that how she will. He thinks she understands, in the curl of her mouth, the lick of tongue along fang, the considering gaze raking him with hot promise for the future.

Remembers that bloody dawn, her body broken, but the breath not yet left her entirely. Dawn screaming. Giles gently patting Buffy's hand. Willow summoning the gods, and getting no joy. And him, Spike, standing, watching the best thing in the world, the only thing that mattered to him, bleeding out in bloody rags.

Flashback. Prague. A mob. A beloved. He did what he had to do, and damn anyone who got in his way. Took her last breath, fed her his blood, supped on hers. Did enough, turns out, to keep her here. He really wasn't sure, till she stirred, if she was any more than a corpse. But he did it.

He thinks some of them are still alive. Dawn, for sure, and at least one of the witches. Not the carpenter boy, he went down hard, split-skulled at the hands of a vampire, like he'd always have expected if he had half a brain. He wonders who Buffy will choose to spare, who will die. Whether a Slayer vampire is a different beast, less constrained to erase what she was. Whether another baby Slayer's been born to come and kill this menace. Or try, more like.

But it's all pretty much idling, isn't it? Because he doesn't care so much. She can kill demons and pretend she's not evil. Or she can gut the lot of them and rise in Sunnydale to open the Hellmouth the way her great-great-granddad never could. He doesn't give a toss what she chooses, because the important thing is that she's here, awake, with him.

Which means he can go on living.

Oh Spike. He would have done something like that. Anything, to save Buffy, just because *he* can't live without her.
Beautifully written as always.

Yeah, he would. Not a year later, but at this point, he would. Thanks so much!

Love it! Particularly your newly vamped Buffy voice. I could see her being an incredibly sarcastic vamp. You know of course that this begs for more...;-)

She would definitely snark a lot - poor Spike wouldn't enjoy it, I think.

It does rather ask for more, but it could be all kinds of angst, so, hmm. Maybe if there's a prompt that inspires more!

This is so powerful and bleak, because of everything he's sacrificed to keep her... Wow.

Thanks! I think it's a decision of despair, so he'd already feel bad about some of the dead, if only because the old Buffy would have done.

This is so troubling in so many ways. An alternative to heaven. I suppose it reminds us that Spike is still unsouled. Nicely done!

Yes, I think he wouldn't have done the same a year later, would he? Glad this pinged for you!

Oh. My. Yes.

He certainly would.

I think so. With terrible consequences.

I can see something like this happening, with Spike trying to be good but his goodness is all tied up with Buffy, so given the choice between dead Buffy or vampire Buffy, yeah, I could see Spike doing it.

I think it had to be at the particular time when he's unsouled, so bound up with her and can see her coming around to him as more than an enemy, so it's the possibilities he would lose that are so impossibly tempting.

Grim, but totally believable. He would have done that if he could.

"I'd be surprised I was alive," she says, and there's a little twinge to her tone that he recognises. So he knows what's coming, even before she goes on, "Except I already know that I didn't."

Should that read "am not" or "I survived"?

And thank you also for being convinced of the grim.

Definitely would have done it if he could.

I, of course, am wondering how long he has until she dusts him.

Great stuff.

I think so, at least at this time in his crush, when he's starting to hope she'll reciprocate.

I don't know, she might end up almost as nutty as Dru, though for different causes. Spike's good with that.

Ah, you snuck that up on me, you did. But of course. Soulless Spike would save her any way he could. I'm a little curious about what she's like now.....

Eeep! That was darker than I usually enpect from you; it took me by surprise. Nicely creepy!

And no trouble believing a season 5 Spike would make this choice. Gah! THough I strongly suspect he'd come to regret it...

Wow. This is really well done. Definitely bleak though. Poor Xander.

WHOA.

My first thought was that she actually was dead or comatose and he was fooling himself (shades of your "Hello to Oblivion"). I did not see this coming at all! Very well done. And seconding snogged - poor Xander (and poor Anya...and Dawn....it's really horrifying.)

And yes definitely shades of Darla here. It's not accident the two of them are contrasted from the very first episode of the series!

Really believable and I'd love to find out what happens next. I think I agree with an earlier post that she'd probably stake him (after having her wicked way with him, obviously).
