A Merry Zombie(free) Christmas

My last hoorah! before Christmas, I think. Another Christmas carol prompt.

Setting: Some time post-series.
Rating: PG
Pairing: Buffy and Spike are enough of a couple for her to call him 'honey.'
For the prompt: See, Amid the Winter's Snow (or the picture that goes with it on the Advent Calendar anyway)
400 words

A Merry Zombie(free) Christmas

Buffy slammed the cabin door behind her. Setting down her basket of freshly-cut logs, she stood her nice new axe - a Christmas present from Spike- against the wall and shook herself like a dog, sending snowflakes flying everywhere.

"Boy, it's cold outside!"

"Here." Spike put a cup of steaming hot chocolate into her hands. "You look like you could do with this, love."

"Aww!" Buffy twinkled at him as she sipped. "You're so thoughtful, honey."

Spike beamed. "Let me help you with those." He peeled her out of her wet coat and boots and led her over to the fire. A cheerful blaze was roaring in the grate. The mantel was decked with Christmas cards, one of which - a smiling Dawn, Willow and Xander all wearing Santa hats, and Giles (likewise hat-wearing, and with a martyred expression) standing behind them - read, Holiday greetings from the Impregnable Fortress.

The sight made Buffy feel warm inside. It was good to know they were safe.

She flopped down onto the couch and rested her head on Spike's shoulder. Outside the window, empty fields, blanketed in white, stretched as far as the eye could see. The gleams of sun that had kept Spike trapped inside the cabin while Buffy chopped wood were gone. The sky was gun-metal grey and full of snow.

"Can see for miles," Spike remarked. "Nothing could sneak up on us here."

Buffy nodded. "Yeah, and all that razor wire is a definite bonus."

Silence fell. Buffy snuggled against Spike. Soon she was toasty warm and struggling to keep her eyes open. The fresh air and exercise had tired her out, she thought.

She dozed for a while, to wake to the delicious smell of eggnog, and the sound of carol singing on their little clockwork radio. It was getting dark. Snow was still falling.

Everything was very peaceful.

She craned over her shoulder, to where Spike was pouring the eggnog into two enamel mugs. His mug was already half-full of blood - eww!

"We'll have to come back here some time," she said. "Have ourselves a proper country style Christmas."

Spike nodded. "Yeah. Never thought of myself as the type for rural retreats - city boy, that's me. But it's been nice to get away from it all."

They exchanged rueful smiles.

"Yeah, zombie apocalypses, huh?" Buffy said, as they clinked their mugs together. "Who needs 'em?"

It's all very idyllic, until the reason for the retreat comes clear. Tee! I imagine those zombies can be rather wearing. Nicely done!

Thank you, and yes, zombies are extremely tedious. No conversation, for a start. :)

Awwww - nice to know they're getting a little break for some them time.
Dec. 20th, 2013 04:32 pm (UTC)
Yes, everyone needs a break, even in the middle of the apocalypse. :)

I do like a zombie or two - even in passing. A lovely, warm Christmas vignette. What a nice change from all the angst I seem to read!

Glad to hear it, and yes, this was surprisingly angst-free, given the zombie apocalypse.
