Lacrimosa's book

The three-point argument is rapidly gaining momentum from all involved, with Spike up above in front of the elevators and leaning over the rails of the balcony, Buffy at the bottom of the stairs, and Angel halfway across the lobby but still near enough to the basement door that he can make a quick exit to the sewers without looking like he’s thinking about making a quick exit through the sewers.
Connor knows about keeping an eye out for escape routes. It’s the sort of one of the first things you do when you enter a new place. Look for the bathroom, look for the exits, see if there are any attractive women around.
And, right now, all of Connor’s escape routes are blocked by melodrama and giant dragon body. And the whole fight is rapidly leaving his area of expertise.
Connor knows a thing or two about high-running emotions; he is still a teenager after all, if only for a little while longer. But the back-and-forth cries of ‘You died!’ and ‘Why didn’t you tell me?!’ and ‘I still care about you!’ that fill the hotel just feel so over-the-top.
Kinda puts his own romantic experiences in perspective, though.
Also makes him realise how much he appreciates that at least two of his parents are normal people in normal relationships.
And, of course, speaking of normal relationships, under the reek of the dragon’s sulphuric breaths, Connor’s just caught the scent of the one thing that could make this whole scene even more emotional without introducing an evil twin.
Connor drops his Psych textbook to the ground and bolts past his father and Buffy, out the front door, down through the entry pathway and skids to a stop just outside the gate.
Nina’s bloodshot eyes go wide and she takes a startled step back.
“Nina,” Connor greets. “Hey.”
“Hi.” She eyes him cautiously, probably not set all that easy by his quick arrival, or the way he moves as she does to block her path into the Hyperion.
“So, you’re back to turning human-ish. That’s cool.”
“Oh,” says Nina. She looks down at her hands as if to reaffirm her lack of claws. “Yeah. Thanks. I’m still sort of edgy. Not sleeping well.”
Connor nods.
It may be getting a bit awkward out here, weird silences with his biological dad’s ex-girlfriend don’t rank among his favourite pastimes, but that’s nothing compared to what would happen if he actually did step aside and let her pass.
“You, uh, you guys still have the dragon, huh?” Nina gestures vaguely at where Cordelia spills up over the hotel’s rooftop, tail coiled and hanging down the building’s side.
“Yeah. I think he likes us,” Connor says. “I’m not sure what he eats yet, though.”
Nina laughs. Painfully, awkwardly, pitifully, but she does laugh.
It’s nice of her.
“Well,” she says, “my sister finally let me out of lockdown. I guess everyone’s still pretty freaked out about everything. I thought I’d come see how you guys are doing.”
“Oh, we’re cool. Yeah.”

Back inside the building, the shouting reaches a new level as something shatters and the dragon responds with a deep warning growl that seems to effectively quiet the trio for the moment.
Nina’s eyes go wide.
“Spike and my dad… they’re… you know.” Connor waves his hand and figures that even if Nina doesn’t know what is really going on inside, doesn’t know any more about Buffy than she needs too, she knows enough about Spike and Angel to know not to actually enter the hotel.
He can see Nina’s shift in thinking spread across her face.
“Right,” she says, sticking her hands in her pockets and hunching her shoulders a little. “Right. I can… come back later. Or not. You can say I stopped by.”
“Yeah,” says Connor. “Sure.”
He will. Eventually. Maybe six months or so.
The argument begins to rise again and sends Connor hurrying after Nina.
“I’ll walk you do your car,” he offers.
Connor knows about escape routes.

Never thought I'd enjoy AtF fic so much (not a big fan of the original).

Great work.

I love the well adjusted Connor in the comics and you write him so well.

Heh. Very nice. I thought Connor was being sort of over-protective (of Angel?) but if he can do double duty and find a way out of a mess that has nothing to do with him (at least, not until Buffy finds out who he is), well, power to him.

So much love for Connor! This is really fun!

Connor knows about escape routes.

Hee again! And Nina! I do love her, and (I may be a little biased) I think she was good for Angel.
