Phoenix - in Ash

Buffy stood on one of the hilly ridges overlooking the smoking city, Faith on her left, Willow on her right.  “And what do we think did this again?”

“That’s just it, nobody knows for sure.  With all the chaos and confusion – well, theories are flying, but facts are lacking.”  Willow scrunched her nose.  “The shamans think it’s a fire god – Pele or Xiulcoatl.  The coven claims it’s a witch gone over the edge.  The other Slayer says it’s a salamander –”

“One very pissed off salamander,” Faith said.

Willow’s lips tightened.  “Which doesn’t make any sense, because salamanders aren’t known for the ability to set things on fire.  Just because she saw one near the flames, it’s all ‘oooh, salamanders bad’!”

“We’ve got reports of fire giants near Camelback, and a Chimera on the opposite end of the city.”  Faith waved her arm in the direction of each.  “And a phoenix sighting right in the middle of downtown Phoenix.”

Buffy raised an eyebrow.  “A phoenix in Phoenix?  How original.  So, it’s like, one great big mythological creature convention?”  She smiled despite herself.  “All we’re missing is a –”

“Don’t say it.  Don’t you dare say it.”  Spike’s head appeared over the ridge.  “Because if there’s a sodding dragon, then before you know it, Saint-Bloody-George himself will appear, wanting to slay himself a dragon.  And we all know how well that went last time.  I get the near-flaming death, and he gets the glory.  Ponce,” he added under his breath.

“Let it go, sweetie.”

“I’m just saying.”

Before she could reply, a new figure rose up out of the smoke and ash, twirling a broadsword, hair perfectly in place.  He grinned, teeth gleaming white in the sooty air.  “I heard you had a little dragon problem.  I can help with that.”  Angel gave his broadsword a jaunty swing.  “I have some experience with dragons, you might say.”

“Have some experience with being a first-class wanker, is what you mean.”

“Now, now.  Jealousy is so ugly.”

“Yeah?  So’s looking like a crispy critter, waiting on your hair and skin to grow back.”  Spike threw his hands in the air.  “I’m out.  Call me when it’s over.”  He stomped away, muttering under his breath.  Just as he disappeared over the far side of the hill, Buffy heard, “Dragons.  Why does it always have to be dragons?”

Blazing, unbearable heat? Sounds like a normal June day in my home town. :D

Ah, Phoenix. How I love your desert heat. It's a dry heat, you know. :)

I felt kinda bad about burning your home up. Hope you evacuated in time. *g*

Interesting take! I really like Angel popping up and Spike stomping away muttering under his breath. Hee!

Much as I adore Spike, I do get a kick out of him having to take a back seat to the Hero, sometimes. Inferiority complexes are fun. :)

This is hilarious! Ensemble interactions are gold.

“I heard you had a little dragon problem. I can help with that.” Angel gave his broadsword a jaunty swing. “I have some experience with dragons, you might say.”

“Have some experience with being a first-class wanker, is what you mean.”

And hey, there's no such thing as too much Indiana Jones.

As a child of the eighties, I fully agree. There is no such thing as too much Indiana Jones.

Thank you!

“Dragons. Why does it always have to be dragons?”

I ask myself this all the time, and am likely to be hearing it a lot more in future, if the rumours that have come to my ears are true.
