Fic: Three for a Funeral

Title: Three for a Funeral
Creator: drizzlydaze
Rating: PG
Setting: Many. Pre-series, Prophecy Girl, The Gift, Chosen, post-series
Word count: 286
Prompt: Phoenix feather—they live within the very boundaries of life and death

You were in darkness. It was an icy plunge, a terrible, choking darkness. You could not breathe—he wouldn’t need to, later; she would die from it—but you knew, somehow, that you could fight, and win. The most searing memory from your first death were lips—her lips on his neck (the fangs seemed less important, somehow, to this virgin boy); his lips on hers, though they were less romantically lips than the breath of life. You gasped—

—But no, that’s the beginning to your next life, and this is about your funeral. There was one for him.

The second time you die, it is from a great height. She looks down, fearless; he looks up, laughing—see, he doesn’t need to look into the pit to know he’s above it. It is not the unexpected death it was before, but a sacrifice. This is the death you’d choose, if you could choose. (It turns out that you cannot; they are not done with you yet.) You die alone, as it must be. She gives words of love; he takes them. You remember when you thought you’d live forever—stupid, because that was already after your first death, and death always returns to reclaim its prizes. Now, though, you walk into its open arms. Death has never looked so much like—

This time, there’s a funeral for her.

You will die for a last time, and there will be a funeral. You will imagine it many times, because your career demands it, and life demands it, but it will never be exactly as you think. It will be as unexpected as the first death, as glorious as the second, and as final as the third—

Oh, I like all the layers in this. Many levels of contrast and compare. Very, very clever.

And I especially like: "the fangs seemed less important, somehow, to this virgin boy." Hee.

I liked writing all the layers. A pretty focused premise, of course, and structured, so the details can fall into place.

Thank you! It's always fun finding parallels between Buffy and Spike. I've always had a thing about their multiple deaths.

Sadly, all true. Or not so sadly. Death is part of life.
