Title Nocturne in Blood
Author Brutti ma buoni
Words 1000
Rating/warnings R, warnings for blood, sex, language… The usual s6 Spuffy warnings :)
Setting s6 with an AU Big Evil Adversary to be dispatched in midseason
Prompt Bad to the bone

It's a bad fight. Not the relish of a drag-out with a clever inferior. Not the bored competence of watching the Slayer take apart some minions. Nope. This is an evil man, with evil helpers, and they need to be taken down. It's a killing fight, and it's only by the skin of Spike's fangs that the deaths are all on the other side.

He and Buffy stand afterward, vaguely staring at each other. Should be laughing, or fucking, the way fighting usually takes them. But today- Well, there's a certain amount of relief, and a ton of bleeding to be dealt with. Blood in the air in Sunnydale is like blood in the water in shark country. Needs fixing.

An advantage to the Slayer having friends who live in cemeteries? Patching up is never too far off. They stagger to the crypt, Buffy's copiously dripping side wound making Spike's mouth water and causing him to vamp out intermittently. But he's not strong enough to fight her, being a mite pulverised himself, even if the chip wouldn't prevent it.

It's a downstairs job, no question: defensible and private this time. Buffy hops up onto the coffee-table-coffin, demure as you like if she wasn't so quiet with exhaustion. He rummages for the cleaner set of bandages and the iodine he's kept on hand since Dru's little mob nightmare. Even vamps can rot, given the worst circumstances, and crypts are pretty much that.

Slayer whips her top off, unconcerned by nakedness. Knowing, he suspects, that he's not in any shape to appreciate it, though he puts up a fair effort to get himself interested. Topless blood-smeared Slayer? Big Spikey thumbs up. But not, ideally, when you can see her ribs. He starts patching, sweating slightly. Nothing to do with shock and blood loss, mind. It's the narrowness of her escape that's getting to him. His vision greys out at the edges.

"Spike?" Her voice is sharp. Warm and alive, and she's okay. Probably healing already, knowing Slayer powers. He, meanwhile, is fading fast.

"Spike," she repeats, the edge blurring into concern. "I can see your bones." No surprise there, he's been all too aware of the state of his arm since the warlock got at him with that bloody great machete. There's a lot of flesh hanging loose in an unpleasant way. Been tearing further while he attended to Buffy's hurt, which shouldn't matter – not like he's getting deader – but he knows isn't how vampires should be. But then, there's a number of reasons why he's not that way these days, and it's no good repining. The Slayer's binding up his arm, brisk and effective, the way the girl is when it comes to near death, and it occurs to him that it's a damn shame she should be so accustomed.

Getting soft, unmistakably, is Spike. The Slayer's killer streak is partly what he loves; the way it matches him. Damn sentimentality taking him over.

He expects her to leave him then, but she remains, close at his side. "You need blood."

Bugger. "Not been shopping of late, love," he says, hating the slight weakness in the words. Truth is, he does need to feed to heal, and he's not right now certain when the next feed will come. But he'll pull through. Nibble on a squirrel if he gets desperate. They're not so bad if you swallow fast.

She pauses. Looks down at herself. She's still a picture from Spike's best category wank-fantasy, bloody tits and warrior wounds. "Is dried blood any good? Because I have some to spare."

She must know exactly what a fine line she's treading. Must. The chip would probably fry Spike before he could drink enough to kill her, but- On the other hand, licking Slayer blood from a naked Slayer? Yeah, like he'd turn that down.

He vamps out, instantly. Well he's only- well, only vampire. And that's the point.

At first, it's the blood that preoccupies him. Slayer blood, iron-rich and zinging through his tastebuds, into his sluggish bloodstream, multiplying and strengthening, and there it is. There's real Spike returning, not the tired bloke at the end of a hard fight. Blood in his mouth, blood in his cock and he's licking harder, trying to get every scrap off her, nudging the edges of the bandages he solicitously wrapped minutes earlier. Pushing his luck, and she wants that, he knows it. She's playing with risks, not caring just how this finishes. Maybe even trusting him to care for her, and he's not going to play her game.

So he forages on, till a flash of pain in his brain says he's pushed too far – and till Buffy's feet come up, just ready to push him off if he doesn't stop. He doesn't exactly, though he's no longer feeding, shredding their remaining clothing in his need to get at her, the real Buffy under the carapace. The blood and bones and cunt of her, and she's all his and spread beneath him on a splintering coffin such as has never yet been able to hold either of them for long. It collapses, unsurprisingly, when they come, not quite together but close enough to splinter rotten corpse-covers at least.

The silence after is reflective, not exhausted. When the Slayer shakes off the coffin and gropes for her indecently-trashed, bloody clothing, she doesn't pretend to be unaware that he's watching. "So…" she pauses. "Thanks. I'm glad you had my back tonight. And, for, you know- Bandages."

"Thanks for the blood," he says. He can taste it still. Maybe he's got a taste for her now. Maybe. Any self-respecting vampire would. Or maybe she's got a taste for feeding him. He's not entirely sure he wants that. But he likely won't refuse her if she offers.

Really beautiful fic.

Sexy, dark, even a little angsty, but so very them.

Bones, blood and sex really shouldn't work this well, but then again, this IS Spuffy we're talking about.

Just Awesome!

Thanks so much! I love my battered s6 guys with their epic levels of barely-hidden dark. Bless 'em.

This is - it's absolutely the perfect microcosm of who they are together. Absolutely brilliant.

I like! It's a little angsty, but then again it is season 6. Really well done descriptions too; it's very visceral.
Oct. 20th, 2013 08:53 am (UTC)
Thanks! Season 6 without angst? Not. Possible. :)
Oct. 20th, 2013 12:39 am (UTC)
But it so doesn't end there!!!!!! Not that Buffy's not going to be in control.

And possibly because I'm far more drunk than intended. But the drinking!!!!
Oct. 20th, 2013 08:53 am (UTC)
Oh, I think so. Pushed the boundaries once, you do it again. Heh.

Hope you're feeling good today.
Oct. 20th, 2013 11:09 am (UTC)
Ha. I think I probably owe you a more coherent comment... Because it is very lovely and visceral!!

I am well today - there was a well-timed moment at 7:30 where I woke up for the loo and had a drink of water.

Appropriately fluffy and dark at the same time. Good look at a possible season 6 FitB.

Thanks so much!

BLOOD AND GORE AND SEX. How them. ♥ Beautiful.
Oct. 20th, 2013 08:54 am (UTC)
Yes. Yes indeed. Glad you liked it!

Of course the chip working when Spike semi-bites Buffy in a S6 setting is part of the AU...

Oct. 20th, 2013 06:07 pm (UTC)
Oh, of course... *g*

It's actually a bit of my fanon, that the chip doesn't fire because Spike isn't trying to kill Buffy and she doesn't care about getting hurt - nothing to do with scrambled anything. In this version, they've experimented more than we saw in canon, so the brakes are there. But also, whatever Buffy lets Spike do is fine with the chip - so there's danger. But I do kind of forget to explain all this every time.

But also, whatever Buffy lets Spike do is fine with the chip - so there's danger.

It's been a while since I've done a series rewatch (esp S4 when the chip is introduced) and for some reason I assumed that the chip is fired by both action and intent in canon?

But I do kind of forget to explain all this every time.

Is this part of a 'series'? (Hey, you're so prolific, how in the world is a poor girl like me supposed to keep up?) Sort of like the Rulesverse but less, um, organized?

"...watching the Slayer take a part some minions."

You made a typo! Brutti made a typo! Fix it! Fix it! *giggles* Yes, I'm that pathetic, hon.

This is wonderfully atmospheric.
Oct. 22nd, 2013 06:15 pm (UTC)
No, no series. Just thinky thoughts I forget to explain sometimes.

Thank you for my typo :)
Oct. 22nd, 2013 07:32 pm (UTC)
I was so shocked - SHOCKED, I TELL YOU! It was like seeing the goddess climb out bed in the morning and realizing she's human. (Also I've been beta'ing again and it's rubbed off on my reading, I'm afraid!)

I wonder, what is the definition of a 'series' or a 'verse' in fanfic?
Oct. 22nd, 2013 09:14 pm (UTC)
*g* My beta-refusenik ways do catch up with me at times. Mostly for quickie fic, I fear.
Oct. 20th, 2013 01:03 pm (UTC)
"a taste for feeding him." Oooh, shivery and marvelous!
Oct. 20th, 2013 06:08 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much! He'll take what she chooses to give. Which may be a lot...
Oct. 20th, 2013 05:10 pm (UTC)
Loved this.
Oct. 20th, 2013 06:10 pm (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know!

I was struck at how they were both cut down to the bone before something like this could happen. Not so much rock bottom as utterly revealed, which might be the same thing to Buffy, once she's had a chance to reflect on it. Wonderfully thought provoking.

I was going to say how much I liked that the chip and Buffy both have the same threshold, but then I thought, "Hey! The chip doesn't work on her anyway!" So never mind.
Oct. 21st, 2013 09:29 pm (UTC)
Yes, I didn't really explain my fanon, did I? I do play with the idea Buffy's level of not caring and Spike not actually wanting to kill her is why the chip doesn't fire. Anyway, glad you overlooked that part...
Oct. 21st, 2013 04:51 am (UTC)
I like this - hard and gritty. Yes I've taste for it.
Oct. 21st, 2013 09:31 pm (UTC)
Careful... that could lead to some dark places. Glad you enjoyed it!
Oct. 22nd, 2013 08:10 am (UTC)
Well I say "Lead on, my dear, lead on!" :D
Oct. 21st, 2013 06:49 am (UTC)
Trying to think of something interesting and constructive to say...but just really want to say it was excellent! :)
Oct. 21st, 2013 09:32 pm (UTC)
That'll do nicely! Thank you.
Oct. 21st, 2013 09:20 pm (UTC)
Wonderful, wonderful writing.
Oct. 21st, 2013 09:32 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much!

I can't help but notice how he cares for her wounds first, before worrying about his. He may be intermittently vamping out and (sort of) considering drinking her, but that's our Spike. He still puts Buffy first, when it comes down to it.

"Maybe he's got a taste for her now." *shivers*
