tenyearsgone

Title: tenyearsgone
Creator: spuffy luvr
Rating: G
Setting:  Ten years later...
Word count: 250
Prompt: Buffy seeks Spike out ten years later.  Sort of.
A/N: Sap. Sappy sap sap.  Makes me want to heave.

It’s just as he remembered.

Just as he remembered her describing it, that is.  Spike has certainly never been here before; hadn’t expected to be here now, either.  There’d been a dragon, and a burst of flame, and for the second time in a year Spike had found himself impersonating a pillar of fire.

Except his existence hadn’t ended, no, instead it had mutated until he was the fire.  This new (and not entirely comfortable) state of being had led Spike to believe he’d met his right and proper end, been sent to H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks.  The way he and Angel had figured it would go, redemption and atonement be damned.  Literally.

Again with the Except.  Despite the cleansing-fire thing going on, Spike doesn’t feel tortured.  He feels… peaceful.  Loved.  Complete.  Knows everything will be fine.  He’s almost concerned it’s a trick, in a vague sort of way, because for the first time since they met he’s not fussed about Buffy.

For the next second, or the next millennia – time really doesn’t have meaning – Spike is perfectly, formlessly happy.  He shares in the joy of the others around him; those he’s loved personally and those he loves now.  Because this is what you do here.  Love.

And then she’s there too.  Her brilliant light makes his previous peace-joy-love seem flat.  “Well, there you are,” she thinks, or he says, or maybe the entire dimension hums with it.  He has a sense of tenyearsgone, which fades into forever, and then they just are.

Imagine that! Vampire (champion) in heaven. I never. But I'm glad! This is very hypnotic and lovely.

Pfft, Angel was wrong. Of course they wouldn't go to Hell. :)

Thank you!

But... but... there's no angst!

Oh wait, maybe some implied angst in Buffy worrying over where he's been for the last 10 years. Yessss! :)

Thanks!

I'm flailing in wordless joy at this.

I love the simplicity of this, the not-spelling-everything-out so I have to do some work here - and then this ending? the perfect balance of timeless and contemporary, romantic and pragmatic. "Well there you are." That's Buffy and Spike all over.

Heh, I was determined to stay at 250 words, which meant a lot of implying and letting you work it out.

I'm flailing in wordless joy at this.

As long as it's not formless joy, we're safe. Cause that would imply you were dead, and... yeah. *stops babbling now* :)

Thank you!

Heh, I was determined to stay at 250 words, which meant a lot of implying and letting you work it out.

I've read stories where the author goes a little too far in trying to let me "work it out" (in fact my former writing partner was like that and I'd have to stop her as her partner or beta reader and say, many times "Ok, how did they get from point A to point B all of the sudden? No, it's not good enough to hope I'll just assume because you haven't or can't be bothered to work it out in your head." No, I wasn't that harsh, trust...) So I have great appreciation for authors who can get that balance "just right." Never mind achieve it in so few words.

As long as it's not formless joy, we're safe. Cause that would imply you were dead, and... yeah.

Ah, my morning wake-up LMAO, and I have no idea what the hell that even means. *hugs*

I really loved reading this. And as I usually dislike sappy stories, I can tell you that I didn't think this fag end was sappy at all.

It was too short and too wonderful and to well written for that.
