A/N: I was sorry to have no time for ghostbusting! I enjoyed all the great stories, though, and I couldn't let the month go by without contributing something. And since it's still Halloween in my time zone, here's one more shivery story. This builds on lilachigh's brilliant theory about why vamps stay quiet on Halloween.

The meaty smack of fist hitting flesh made Darla and Drusilla look up from their cards.

"What was that for?"

Darla returned to shuffling. It was only Angelus chastising young William again.

"I told you to catch two ripe girls and bring them here at nightfall." Angelus stood over William, his arm drawn back for another blow.

William rubbed his jaw resentfully. "Yeah," he cocked his head belligerently. "But I thought it would be more fun to hunt tonight. It's our night, innit?" He extricated himself from the ruined table that had broken his fall. "Hallowmas. And we're the departed, seeking vengeance." William grinned half-heartedly, looking to the women for support.

"Idiot," Angelus growled. "We can't go out tonight."

"Not safe," Drusilla shook her head as she placed her cards, one by one, in a perfect fan. "The night is haunted."

"By us," William repeated.

Darla took pity on the boy. "By souls," she explained. "All Hallows Eve is the last chance for souls to roam the earth, seeking their enemies. Would you want your soul to find you? Return to its house and take possession again? Do you want to become what you were?"

William shuddered. "'Course not," he unclenched his fists. "Back to the pewling mama's boy? No fear." He pawed through the empty bottles lining the mantlepiece. "Is there anything to drink?"

"There would have been," Angelus grimaced, "if you had done as you were told."

"Cards it is, then. Deal me in." William reversed a chair from the table and sat astride it. Darla dealt him a hand. He studiously refused to flinch when Angelus passed behind him.

Drusilla laid down the nine of hearts. "My William had such a sweet heart, beating, beating." She stroked the card with a gloved fingertip.

"'Til you stopped it," William replied. He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed the fingers. "And what a change! New strength, new friends." He laid a card on the table and drew another. "Why would I want to go back?"

"For love," Dru sighed.

Darla smirked. "Men change their world for love, or what they think is love." She frowned at her cards.

"Like Daddy loved Grandmama, and I loved Daddy. And Willie loved me."

"I was there, darling," Darla drawled. "You didn't love Daddy til after."

Angelus stopped his pacing to pull up a chair. "What game are you playing, anyway?" He scooped the cards toward himself and began to shuffle the deck. "One hand of poker. Loser goes out for food."

William chuckled, his eyes alight. "I'll take that bet."

Drusilla shifted nervously. "I don't want you to leave." She laid a hand on William's arm.

"No fear, my princess. I'm going to win."

"You won't, though. You'll lose, and lose, and change your world." Her lip began to quiver.

William was too engrossed in beating Angelus to pay attention to her pout.

"Loser needs to bring back new candles, too." He nodded at the tapers on the shelf above them, flickering down to stubs. "We want to be able to see our meal."

I've never come across lilachigh's theory before, but it works really well. Nice Spuffy presentiment, and lovely FF interaction.

Very beautiful!
I especially loved the dialogue, you don't use the easily recognizable mannerisms, but it sounds really "them".
