No Time For Bravery (Pg13)

Author Brutti ma buoni
Title No Time for Bravery
Rating PG13
Words 750
Setting an AU post season 5, in which nobody died in the Gift (which may have been a mistake)
Prompt The Hole in the Wall Gang (technically a bit more Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but never mind)

As last desperate holdout hopes go, this isn't one.

It's Glory and her minions out there, and they're pissed as hell. No way can the Scooby gang beat them without some firepower, and they don't have anything more advanced than three stakes and a lump hammer.

Giles may have been right, that it was a mistake to let Ben live, after they stopped Glory's plan for the Key. Buffy resolves never to tell him that. Which, right now, will not be a hard promise to keep. The measure of their lives is how long before Willow's bubble is exhausted, and Willow without Tara is draining fast.

Xander is swinging the lump hammer in a professional kind of way. Giles has a stake, so does Dawn. Buffy has the third. So Spike has no weapons at all, apart from his vampire self. He's looking out at the army of minions with a kind of relish Buffy recognises. Better to fight than to sit tight and sweat till the forces of evil crash into their hideout.

She wanders over to sit with him. It's comforting, talking to a fellow warrior, sometimes, even if he is evil.

"Did I mention I still think we did the right thing?"

He nods. "Did I mention I think Giles was right? And I'd have offed young Ben for you if I could've. Saved anyone else the bother."

She sighs. "Yeah. You're probably right. I was on this whole 'nobody has to die' kick. And… well. We know where that leads."

"Yep. Everybody's dead, Dave," says Spike, then notices her blank look. "Sorry, love, Brit telly reference. I'd recommend you watch it, except-" He gestures. "Imminent slaughter situation. Probably not time to buy the DVD."

There's a pause. "Do you still have that hip flask?"

He looks surprised, but rummages in his duster till he finds it. Opens, sniffs suspiciously. "'S scotch, though. Not your tipple, I'd wager."

"Not the moment to care." She takes a swig, shudders. "Yyyyyyeaaargh." And another. Giles looks up from his quiet meditations. Buffy shrugs at him and waves the flask. He shakes his head, and reaches into his pocket. "Okay. Giles brought his own booze."

"Good," says Spike, and grabs the flask back. He swallows over and over, throat bobbing. Buffy watches. So Spike's scared too. That's… actually comforting.

She puts her hand over his, on the flask, and he stops before it's quite drained. "Spike?"

He turns his head, and she's suddenly aware of how close he is. Lips barely a couple of inches from hers, in the shrinking confines of the safety bubble. "What, love?"

"I'm not sure- Did I ever actually say thanks? For-" She thinks of the list. Protecting Dawn. Being sweet about her mom. Backing up Buffy in the crisis points. Throwing Doc off the tower, and falling in the process. Not leaving after the big battle, but sticking around. Not pushing his ridiculous crush; at all.

He's not such a bad guy to have at your back. Or at your side, in the last moments of your life. Not really. She focuses on his lips. Would it be so bad, to send him to their certain death with a kiss?

When she looks back up, Spike's eyes are steady on hers. "No thanks, love. Not out of pity. Not to get me to my own special hell with a fake smile on my face." His voice is steady, perfectly grave. Perfectly unSpike, if you haven't heard him talk about protecting your sister to the end of the world and beyond.

"Okay. Afterwards, then," she says, and she means it. He really isn't such a bad guy. Not if you're Buffy Summers, and you actually know him.

Spike catches that sincerity. His lips quirk, just a fraction and he looks away, to where Glory and her minions are training warlock power on the bubble, channelling its imminent destruction. "I'll hold you to that, love." He takes another swallow from his flask, and when he speaks, his voice is cocky, the old Spike once more. "You see any fuckers out there in leather pants, Slayer?"

She looks. "Nope. Spangles on the hellgod, yes. No leather."

"Great. For a moment there, I thought we were in trouble." He stands up, takes Buffy's hand and hauls her to her feet. She nods, turns to Willow.

"Okay guys, no time like the present."

And they run to meet their fate.

This is awfully cute and sweet (in an imminent demise kind of way). I adore end of S5 Spike. And Buffy does too, hurray!

My overwrought brain is not getting the leather pants reference. (Angelus?)

*g* Yeah. Angelus and his evil leather pants are definitely what Spike would prefer not to see (and also it's a Butch Cassidy reference, of course).

Ah, it was the Butch Cassidy reference I was missing. I'm not familiar with his wardrobe choices. :)

Absolute awesomeness.

Love the Butch and Sundance parallel. And I adore that Giles brought his own booze. He so would. Heh.

Thanks so much!

Giles without Scotch is not something you want when facing certain death...

And in my head, they succeed somehow and Spike gets his kiss (and more)....

Oh, my head too! Dunno how, but definitely.

Very interesting AU! I like this idea a whole lot. The flask, and Giles bringing his own booze, made me giggle.

Thanks! I'm quite taken with it, though I've no idea how they get out alive.

Glory's just about to kill Buffy (or Spike, or...) and Dawn stakes her in the back... just as she turns to Ben.

Lovely! Dark, nuanced, really feels like canon. Bravo!
*clap clap*

Yes. Spike shows her a side of himself few others get to see.
