Claws

Title: Claws
Prompt: Dick Whittington
Setting: About a year post-NFA. AU, no comics, apocalypse averted, and pretend all that that awkward reunion stuff is of the past.
Words: about 700
Note: As promised, holiday cheer! Possibly even schmoopiness. Also, gratuitous placement of a Hellmouth to make Christmas happen in a place with Real Winter.

The noise and rush of Christmas had come and gone— Giles and Olivia, Xander and his new squeeze, Willow and Kennedy, and even Andrew had sat around the kitchen table and shared the modest Christmas dinner they’d provided. Everyone had helped clear away, small gifts had been exchanged, and then the guests had made their ways home in the snowy evening.

Snow. Buffy wasn’t sure she’d ever get used to the sheer volume Milwaukee got each winter, but a Slayer had to go where the Hellmouth was, and her little troupe of Scoobies had followed her. And she had to admit, it was beautiful and festive as it drifted over the Christmas lights on the block and muted their shine to a soft, colorful glow.

Buffy snuggled closer to Spike on the couch, her cheek resting on the black fabric of his tee shirt. His arm wrapped around her shoulders and his hand twined through her hair, absently stroking. A warm house, a full belly, and this… whatever they were… Buffy was so relaxed she felt like she was made of Jello. The TV buzzed away quietly. Piano music tinkled and Snoopy danced across the screen.

A sharp thump brought Buffy’s head up suddenly. “What was that?”

“Probably nothing, love. Snow falling off the roof, maybe.” Spike slid his hand down her shoulder reassuringly to rest on her hip.

Another thump, followed by a scrabbling sound. Buffy sat up. “That sounded like it was coming from the kitchen.” She leaned down, fishing under the couch. She had to have a stake close around here somewhere…

“Sweetheart, relaa—aaaah!” Spike started, straightening, just in time to feel a set of claws sink into the back of his neck. Very sharp claws. Very small, sharp claws. Reaching back over his shoulder, he pulled a hissing, two pound ball of gray fluff and courage off himself. The little smoke-colored kitten had been Dawn’s Christmas present. After attempting to scale the Christmas tree and having been rescued and taken to bed by his new owner, he had clearly escaped in search of nocturnal adventures. Buffy scooped the kitten into her lap, where he instantly dissolved into a purring lump, glaring at Spike through narrowed green eyes. Spike rubbed at the back of his neck, checking his hand for blood. “Ow. Little wanker,” he glowered at Buffy. “I’ve got a poker game on Thursday, ya know. Blighter could earn his keep. Too bad he’s not a Siamese—that’s where the money’s at.”

“You wouldn’t! It would break Dawn’s heart. And kitten poker is wrong. Just… wrong!” Buffy burst out, folding the kitten close in her arms, before she noticed the corner of Spike’s mouth twitch into a smirk. Letting out a snort, she swatted Spike on the shoulder before she set the small creature on the floor.

Spike sank back into the couch cushions, watching with appreciation as Buffy rose and gave a little stretch. He reached for her wrist to pull her back into his lap, but she took a couple of leisurely steps backward. “I’m gonna make some hot chocolate. With marshmallows. You want some?” she asked.

“Sure,” he replied. As she walked toward the kitchen he called after her, “I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s just a card game. You were the one who was gonna stake the furball.”

When Buffy returned with two steaming mugs, stocking feet silent on the hardwood, it was to see Spike scratching the kitten behind its ears and muttering to it softly. Thinking himself unobserved, he cuddled the little animal against his chest in the crook of his elbow. Tough guy.

Buffy hurried to set the mugs down before the giggles bubbling in her throat erupted into gales of laughter.

Most of the time I think they are more interesting when they are unhappy. But warm and fuzzy is fun sometimes. Thanks!

They are definitely more interesting when they're unhappy - but I love them both, so I like to see them get that happy ending from time to time.

Aw, that's sweet. Spike threatening to gamble with the kitten is adorable, as is Buffy's dismay. I really like these lines:

Spike sank back into the couch cushions, watching with appreciation as Buffy rose and gave a little stretch. He reached for her wrist to pull her back into his lap, but she took a couple of leisurely steps backward.

It's very sensual, and I like that they're at the point where when he reaches for her, he's not overreaching boundaries.

it was to see Spike scratching the kitten behind its ears and muttering to it softly. Thinking himself unobserved, he cuddled the little animal against his chest in the crook of his elbow.

Awwww, and I just want a picture of this scene so much!

The secret kitten-cuddling is fairly directly based on a time I inadvertently snuck up on my employer while he was holding/talking to a cat (he put it down really, really fast when he saw me). Thanks for the comment-- I'm glad you enjoyed it! I kinda want a picture too now...

Heeee! This is great! Though I'm sure Spike's just buttering the kitten up so he'll be easier to lure over to a poker game... ;)

Lol, probably. But he'd go get it back if it made Dawn or Buffy cry.
