Father of Lies

A rather literal snippet for Dick Whittington. Spike, in the Hellmouth, about 5 minutes before the end of Chosen.

Father of Lies, Spike/Buffy, PG, 200 words

History is a funny old game.

Spike learned, before he was Spike, the history of Sir Richard Whittington. Started as the richest merchant in London, a man of wealth and charity, who gave the city a tidally-flushed toilet among other marvels. He ended up played by a girl in tights, famed only for a rat-catching cat, and over six centuries on that false fame doesn't seem to be dying.

William Pratt, a mewling pisspoor poet, died a virgin at 28 and killed his loving mother two days after. William the Bloody, later known as Spike, was a terror to humankind across the globe for over a century, yet a slave to his crazy, faithless seer of a sire, had anyone known it. Then tamed, muzzled, ridiculed by the worlds both demon and human, he was proud to save the world. In the name of the Slayer, and of love.

He's dying now, flaring out his soul in the cause of humanity. He wonders, in the interstices of pain and flame and goodbye, how he will be remembered, and for how long.

He very much hopes there's no sodding cat involved, anyway.

You have no soul.

(I hope you have some leather trousers. They seem to be mandatory for the soulless.)

He was proud to save the world and be remembered as such. Or maybe forgotten.

But not as a feline's sidekick! He has some standards.

Ahaha! That's our man. He may dip his toes into melancholy, but he'll never bathe in it.

Awww... (Though now I want the pantomime version of Spike's story. He'd be a great trouser role! And you'd have Dru and Darla as pantomime dames!)
